The Reading Retreat

This is an intimate retreat, over the long Whitsun weekend, nestled in the tranquility of the Barracks - a true sanctuary for book lovers. With a sole focus on providing you ample time and space for reading, we ensure your every need is met. From delectable vegan meals to healthy snacks, specialty teas, freshly brewed coffee, and a variety of soft drinks, everything is taken care of. Whether you prefer solitary reading or engaging discussions with fellow bibliophiles, the choice is yours.

This is your weekend, and you can keep it as free-form as you like. But also, we provide:

• buffet breakfast Good News of the Day
• a narrated woodland walking story
• rivetting stories by a roaring campfire
• bedtime stories for grown ups
• all your vegan meals lovingly prepared, using as far as possible ingredients grown on site
• unlimited coffee from Kaipo - possibly the best, most ethical coffee in Europe
• comfy chairs inside and out
• time spent with fellow book nerds, nerding out on books!

PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND CARPOOLING

Getting all the way to The Barracks by public transport is quite tricky. Getting close enough to us for us to be able to arrange to come and pick you up is 100% a thing that we can do.

ABOUT THE BARRACKS

The Barracks has variously been described as "An Arc against climate collapse", "a living art project" and "home of the Happy Doomer". For this weekend, we are a reading sanctuary and nothing else. It's not 5 star luxury, but it's a long way of slumming it as well. We:

• grow all our own food
• are working on the extensive medical herb garden for 2024
• contemplate rebuilding after collapse
• practice radical authenticity
• rescue piggies
• love being alive, in the middle of a beautiful forest, miles from civilisation.
